At Your Service – Sherkin North Shore
Mike and Kathy O’Connor wish to let everyone in Sherkin, and all of their friends, know that Sherkin North Shore will be highlighted on the “At Your Service” TV programme on Sunday, February 1st, 2015 at 8:30pm on RTE One. Mike and Kathy haven’t seen the show yet, but the producer Maggi has ensured them that the island itself “steals the show!” Last summer was blessed with good weather, so it’s probable that there will be some great island footage from the film crew.
As Sherkin North Shore was limited in the number that could be invited to participate in the launch with Francis and John Brennan, the Social Dancing Club from Sherkin was invited, and participated well in the set-dancing workshop led by Anne Keane from Millstreet. All enjoyed the feast prepared by Jean Paul.
A great day was had by all, and Mike and Kathy once again want to thank all of their family and friends who helped so much to make the summer and the preparation for “At Your Service” so successful.
Fine Gael Cork South West TD, Noel Harrington, has today (Wednesday) welcomed the news that funding for the Development Offices on non-Gaeltacht islands is confirmed for the remainder of 2015, while a longer term plan is worked out.
“The Minister for the Gaeltacht, Joe McHugh, has informed me that funding for the non-Gaeltacht islands is secure for the remainder of 2015.
“An important meeting took place on this matter between Minister McHugh and his colleague at the Department of Environment and Local Government, Minister Ann Phelan.
“The two Departments are currently examining options to support the non-Gaeltacht islands in the mid to long term. With this in mind the funding for 2015 has been secured in order to allow the time and space needed to work on the longer term plan.
“I was particularly pleased to note the comments by Minister McHugh that island representatives will be consulted as part of this planning process. It is vital that we hear the voices of those who most depend on the Development Offices served by this funding.
“Having brought Minister McHugh to visit both Sherkin and Bere Islands, I know he has a real understanding of the challenges faced by island communities. He was left in no doubt as to the need for the island community development offices.
“I will continue to work with Minister McHugh to ensure that island communities are protected and that a secure plan is put in place for their future.”
